Bhoomiputra Foundation and Khana Chahiye: Bringing Hope to Koli Families in Tough Times

The COVID-19 pandemic was a challenging period for everyone, but for Mumbai’s Koli community—the original inhabitants of the city—the struggle was compounded by the devastating impact of recurring cyclones. Over the past couple of years, the Koli community faced not only the hardships of the pandemic but also the aftermath of two destructive cyclones, with a third striking during the height of the health crisis. These back-to-back calamities severely affected livelihoods, especially for Koli women who are integral to the community’s sustenance.

In this time of dire need, Bhoomiputra Foundation stepped up to provide relief and hope. Partnering with the humanitarian organization Khana Chahiye, the Foundation identified vulnerable families in Madh Island, one of the Koli settlements hit hardest by the pandemic and cyclones. Together, they distributed essential ration kits to 231 families, ensuring they had access to basic necessities during these unprecedented times.

The initiative was not just about providing food; it was about standing with the Koli community when they needed it the most. The collaboration between Bhoomiputra Foundation and Khana Chahiye highlighted the importance of unity and compassion in overcoming adversity.

This act of solidarity and service reinforced Bhoomiputra Foundation’s commitment to supporting marginalised communities, particularly the sons and daughters of the soil, during crises. The Foundation continues to advocate for the welfare and empowerment of the Koli community, recognition their unique cultural heritage and the immense challenges they face in a rapidly changing world.

Bhoomiputra Foundation’s work during the pandemic serves as a reminder that even in the darkest times, collective efforts can bring light and hope to those who need it most. Similar activities done at Versova Koliwada & Versova Shivkar Koli Samaj around 800 Families Benefitted.
