Mumbai’s Koliwadas and Gaothans, home to the city’s original inhabitants, have long been under pressure, facing encroachments and challenges that threaten their livelihoods and heritage. Bhoomiputra Foundation, led by its President, Vikas Motiram Koli, has raised a clarion call against the perceived double standards of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) in handling issues affecting the Koli community.
The Foundation, dedicated to the betterment of the “Bhoomiputras” (Sons of the Soil), has steered clear of political affiliations to remain a true advocate for the people. Recently, the Foundation hosted a gathering of community members from across districts to unite voices against injustices and build solidarity.

At the core of the grievances is the MCGM’s treatment of Koliwadas and Gaothans. “Many matters concerning these areas are sub judice, yet proceedings and actions continue in favor of builder lobbies,” said representatives from fishermen’s organizations. One incident that highlights these concerns is the dismantling of the Shri Meenatai Thakre Mandai market in Dadar.
Kanchan Tapori, a licensed vendor at the market, described how municipal officers, under the pretext of “just changing the roofs,” asked women vendors to vacate the area. Instead, the entire market was demolished. “This is our livelihood, yet it was destroyed in broad daylight without warning,” Tapori lamented.

Reflecting on these injustices, Vikas Motiram Koli questioned the spirit of freedom as India celebrates its 75th year of independence. “Prime Minister Modi has urged us to celebrate Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav, but I must ask, ‘Kahe ki azadi?’ (Freedom of what?). On our own land, our mothers and sisters are seeing their businesses crumble. Are we truly free?”
Bhoomiputra Foundation continues to stand as a voice for Mumbai’s original inhabitants, demanding accountability and equitable treatment. As the community grapples with these challenges, the question of true independence resonates louder than ever.
