Reconnecting Roots: How Bhoomiputra Foundation and Bombay61 are Revitalizing Koli Heritage

Mumbai’s vibrant history owes much to the Koli community, the city’s original inhabitants, whose rich culture and heritage are often overshadowed by the rapid urbanization of the metropolis. Recognizing the importance of preserving this legacy, Bombay61 Studio, in collaboration with the Ministry of Mumbai’s Magic, embarked on a placemaking initiative at Versova Koliwada. These activities, supported by Bhoomiputra Foundation, focus on revitalising public spaces and strengthening the bond between the Koli community and their surroundings.

At the heart of this effort is Vikas Motiram Koli, Founder of Bhoomiputra Foundation, who played a pivotal role in mobilizing resources and facilitating connections with grassroots communities. His efforts ensured that the project resonated with local needs and fostered behavior change, making it more impactful and sustainable.

Transforming Spaces with Art and Design

The project’s transformative activities include revitalizing the Bhandari's community well and the Mandvi Gully, two vital spaces at Versova Koliwada. Through a blend of urban design interventions and street art, these spaces have been reimagined to highlight their historical and cultural significance.

Local Koli artists, including Sairaj Shigwan (Mulund Koliwada), Nilesh Dhakle (Versova Koliwada), and Rujvi Sankpal (Lalbaug, Parel), were integral to the project. Their work infused authenticity and ensured that the artistic interpretations reflected the true essence of the Koli community.

The project not only beautified these areas but also rekindled a sense of pride among the residents. By actively involving the community in design interventions, it has fostered a deeper connection to the spaces they inhabit.

Documenting History for Future Generations

Complementing the placemaking activities, Bombay61 Studio documented Koli history and culture through a digital photo exhibition titled Through the Eyes of the Kolis: A Reflection on Mumbai’s Past, Present, and Future. Hosted by The Heritage Lab and supported by the Ministry of Mumbai’s Magic, this exhibition sheds light on the vulnerabilities the Koli community faces while challenging outdated slum narratives often associated with their settlements.

A Shared Vision for Preservation

Through these collaborative efforts, Bhoomiputra Foundation, Bombay61 Studio, and the Ministry of Mumbai’s Magic have demonstrated how design-led interventions can empower communities, preserve cultural heritage, and challenge misconceptions.

For the Koli community, these projects symbolize more than just urban beautification—they represent a reclaiming of identity and a celebration of their enduring connection to Mumbai’s soul.
